Who is required to complete hunter education in Minnesota?

You need a hunter education firearms safety certificate to purchase a Minnesota firearms hunting license if you are born after December 31, 1979. Those between 11 and 15 years of age are required to take a Field Day.

Is completion of the Minnesota state agency–approved course required to buy a license?

Yes, Minnesota requires that all hunters born after December 31, 1979, first complete a course approved by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and IHEA-USA to purchase a Minnesota firearms hunting license.

Reciprocity

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Minnesota Course Completion Voucher. Likewise, Minnesota will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Final Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

About Your Certification

What is the proof of online Minnesota ilearntohunt Course completion?

Once you pay for and pass the online course, you will be able to immediately print out the Temporary Hunter Education Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Temporary Hunter Education Certificate right then and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.

If you are between 11 and 15 years of age, you are required to bring this document with you to your Field Day.

What is the permanent Minnesota Course Completion Voucher?

After you successfully complete the online course, you will have access to your voucher. On page 2 of your voucher, you will see the MN DNR procedure on how to self-certify with the state.
