New Mexico Hunting Laws and Regulations

Who is required to complete hunter education in New Mexico?

New Mexico law requires that all individuals who are under 18 years of age must complete a certified hunter education course to apply for or purchase a firearms hunting license in New Mexico.

Is completion of the New Mexico state agency-approved course required in order to buy a license?

In some cases, the answer is yes. In New Mexico, hunters younger than 18 years old must first complete a hunter education course in order to buy a license. This course must be approved by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and IHEA-USA.

Reciprocity

The New Mexico Hunter Education Number is accepted by all U.S. states, provinces, and other countries with mandatory hunter education requirements. In return, New Mexico accepts Hunter Education certifications from other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. This mutual acceptance is known as “reciprocity.”

Quizzes and/or Exams

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Final Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 75% on the Final Exam to pass. You have 2 attempts to pass the Final Exam. If you do not pass the exam in the 2 attempts given, you will be required to repeat the entire course. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

What is the proof of online New Mexico ilearntohunt Course completion?

Once you pass the Final Exam and pay for the Hunter Education Number, you will be able to immediately print out the Instructions for Completing Certification. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Instructions for Completing Certification right then, and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.

What is the permanent New Mexico Hunter Education Number?

The Hunter Education Number is proof that you have successfully completed all the education requirements. The Hunter Education Number will be mailed to you by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish after you complete all certification requirements.
