Who is required to complete hunter education in Montana?

According to Montana law, all hunters who were born after January 1, 1985, must complete hunter education certification in order to hunt in Montana.

Is completion of the Montana state agency-approved course required in order to buy a license?

Yes, in some cases. In order to buy a license, Montana requires that hunters who were born after January 1, 1985, must first complete a course approved by the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and IHEA-USA.

Reciprocity

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Montana Hunter Education Certificate. Likewise, Montana will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Quizzes and/or Exams

Do I have to take an online exam?

If you are 18 years of age or older, the Online Qualifier Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 85% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

If you are 11-17 years of age, you must complete this online course for admission to the Field Day. You are required to attend the Field Day to complete your hunting safety certification.

What is the proof of online Montana ilearntohunt Course completion?

Once you pass and pay for the online course, you will be able to immediately print out the Hunter Education Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion, and it serves as your permanent certificate.

If you are 11-17 years of age, you will need to bring this document with you to your Field Day.
