Where Can You Find the Florida Hunter Safety Course?

Florida offers two ways to complete your hunter education requirements, and where you go depends on which path you choose.

  • You can take the online portion at ilearntohunt, where you work through the material on your own schedule and on any device.
  • If you'd rather skip the online portion, FWC's Traditional Course combines classroom instruction and the hands-on Field Day into one in-person session, led by a certified volunteer instructor.

Note: If you complete the online course, you'll still need to locate and register for a Field Day, either in person or virtual, before you're certified.

Use the table below as a quick reference for where to register for each option.

Who Needs to Take the Florida Hunter Safety Course?

Florida requires hunter education for anyone born on or after June 1, 1975, once they turn 16.

There's no minimum age to take the online course itself, so younger students can get a head start before it's required.

You don't need to be a Florida resident to take the course. Once your Hunter Education Certificate is on file with the FWC, it's valid for life, so check FWC's season dates before you head out.

How to Take Your Florida Hunter Safety Course

Getting certified in Florida means completing two separate steps in the right order, and knowing where to go for each one matters.

  1. Visit the ilearntohunt Florida course to start the self-paced online course. Most students finish in about 3 hours.
  2. Print your Field Day Voucher once you pass, since you'll need it as proof you finished the online portion. The voucher is good for 365 days.
  3. Register for and attend a required Field Day, either in person or virtual, where you'll complete hands-on activities and a final exam.

Bring your voucher to the Field Day, since you won't be admitted without it. Start your certification well ahead of the fall hunting season if you plan to hunt it for the first time, since Field Day spots can fill up fast as hunting season approaches.

What's Included in a Florida Field Day, and Why Is It Required?

The Field Day exists to confirm hands-on skills the online course can't fully teach, like safely handling a real firearm under supervision.

During the 4- to 6-hour session, you'll move through several stations led by certified volunteer instructors and an FWC law enforcement officer.

Expect instruction and hands-on practice in:

  • Florida's hunting laws and regulations
  • Hunter ethics and responsible behavior in the field
  • Safe firearm carry positions and crossing obstacles safely
  • Loading, unloading, and clearing an obstruction from a firearm
  • Live-fire marksmanship with rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, or archery equipment
  • Shoot-or-don't-shoot decision-making scenarios

The day wraps up with a final exam, and you'll need to score 80% or higher to pass. All firearms, ammunition, and course materials are provided free of charge. You just need to bring your Field Day Voucher, a valid ID, and proper clothing for the outdoor sessions.

Can You Complete Florida's Field Day Virtually?

Yes. FWC offers a virtual Field Day held over Microsoft Teams for the classroom-style portion of certification, in addition to traditional in-person sessions with hands-on shooting activities.

Check availability when you register, since not every session offers both formats.

How Much Does the Florida Hunter Safety Course Cost?
