How to Get Your California Hunter Education Card in 2026

Remember: First-time hunters or hunters who have not had a hunting license in another state must complete a hunter education course approved by the CDFW (and an in-person follow-up class) before hunting.

The State of California offers two options for taking the course and getting certified.

Option 1: Take a Traditional In-Person Course

The traditional or "classroom" course is a minimum of ten hours in a classroom (in-person) setting. The coursework includes classroom instruction, homework, and field instruction.

The field work portion of the class includes:

  • Firearm safety and handling
  • Sportsmanship and ethics
  • Wildlife management and conservation
  • Wildlife identification
  • Archery
  • Black powder
  • Survival
  • First Aid
  • Game care

After completing the course, you'll receive a Certificate of Completion.

Don't wait too late to register for a course and complete it! You'll need to choose a date, time, and location that's convenient for you with plenty of time to complete the course before hunting season begins.

Option 2: (Hybrid) Take an Online Course and Follow-up Class

Note: The online course alone no longer meets California's requirements for hunter education.

However, taking an online course for the classroom portion of the requirement is a convenient option for hunters. Taking the ilearntohunt course for California can be a great option for young hunters who might find the in-person classroom setting more challenging to learn.

After completing the online course, print the Online Course Completion Voucher. This is proof that you completed and passed the online portion of the course. You'll need this voucher to attend a follow-up class with a certified Hunter Education instructor in California.

You must complete the online portion of the hunter education requirement before registering for and completing the in-person follow-up class. As with the fully-in-person option, make sure you sign up for and complete the follow-up requirement before hunting season!

How to Get Your California Hunting License in 3 Easy Steps

With your ilearntohunt hunter education course complete, you're ready to get your hunting license!

Note: You'll only need to take and pass the hunter safety course one time. Your certification is good for life!

Here are three easy steps for getting your CA hunting license:

  1. Meet the CDFW Requirements for Hunter Education
Again, if you are hunting for the first time this year or you have not had a hunting license in another state, you must meet the state's requirements for completing a state-approved hunter education course before purchasing your license.

ilearntohunt makes it easy to complete the online part of the requirement, approved by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW).

  2. Choose and Purchase the License You Need
Make sure you buy the right license based on what you plan to hunt. California offers resident, nonresident, junior, disabled veteran, or recovering service member license options.

Then, purchase your license online, at a CDFW License and Revenue Branch, or at an approved license agent location (like many sporting goods stores including Big 5 stores, Wal-Mart stores, and other designated locations).

  3. Carry Proof of Your License When Hunting
You must always carry your hunting license with you in the field!

Additionally, if tags are required for a legal hunt (for deer, turkey, etc.), make sure to tag your harvest properly.

Why Hunter Safety Education is Important

Why take a hunter safety course? And why does the state make it a requirement?

Hunter climbs into tree stand, hunter education concept.

Simple answer: it keeps hunters safe and keeps hunting strong. Hunter education isn’t just for beginners—it’s for anyone who steps into the field, whether you’re carrying a rifle, bow, or crossbow.

When every hunter in California completes an approved hunter education course, it means we all know how to look out for ourselves, watch out for others, and respect the land we hunt. That shared responsibility helps protect the future of hunting and the traditions we care about.

Hunter education is essential because it:

  • Helps prevent accidents and injuries.
Good training goes a long way. Learning proper firearm handling, safe shooting habits, and how to stay aware in the field lowers the chances of accidents and keeps everyone safer out there.

  • Builds confident, capable hunters.
Hunter education covers more than just safety. You’ll learn navigation, basic first aid, survival skills, and how to use your gear the right way. It also reinforces respect for other hunters, landowners, and the land itself.

  • Encourages ethical, responsible hunting.
Doing things the right way matters. Safety courses emphasize fair chase, respect for wildlife, and following the rules so we can keep wildlife populations healthy and hunting traditions alive for the next generation.

  • Keeps you legal.
In most states, including California, you need to complete a certified hunter education course before buying a hunting license. Hunter education makes sure everyone in the field understands the laws and plays by the same rules.

Hunter safety courses keep the sport safe, support conservation efforts, and equip hunters with the knowledge and skills they need to hunt responsibly and successfully. A hunter safety course is the best way to start hunting and enjoy a lifetime of hunts.

Why is it Important to Take a State-Specific Hunter Education Course?

California Fish & Wildlife Department logo

A lot of states recognize hunter safety certifications from other states. That’s called "reciprocity." It’s convenient, sure, but relying on a course from somewhere else can mean missing important California-specific info.

Every state has its own rules, regulations, and safety considerations, and those details matter when you’re trying to hunt legally and safely. What works in one state doesn’t always translate cleanly to another.

So before you assume one course covers everything, make sure you’re truly prepared for hunting in California. Sign up for the ilearntohunt California hunter education course and get certified.

It only takes a few hours, and it’s time well spent!
