Who is required to complete hunter education in Virginia?

According to Virginia law, all first-time hunters and hunters who are 12 through 15 years old must complete hunter education certification in order to hunt in Virginia.

Is completion of the Virginia state agency-approved course required to buy a hunting license?

Yes. In order to buy a license, Virginia requires that first-time hunters and all hunters 12 through 15 years old must first complete a course approved by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and IHEA-USA.

Reciprocity

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Virginia Hunter Education Certificate. Likewise, Virginia will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as "reciprocity.")

Quizzes and/or Exams

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Final Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the Final Exam to pass. You have 0 attempts to pass the Final Exam. If you do not pass the exam in the 0 attempts given, you will be required to repeat the entire course. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

Once you pay for and pass the online course, you will be able to immediately print out the Hunter Education Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Hunter Education Certificate right then and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.

The Hunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the education requirements. This certificate is your permanent certificate and allows you to legally purchase a hunting license or permit where required.
